A Case study On
Assessment of the school and college buildings of Kathmandu Valley for Earthquake Hazard Preparedness
The entire territory of Nepal lies in high seismic hazard zone. Earthquake is the most serious natural calamities for Nepal mainly its capital city. Though one of the most threatening and serious outcome it may lead, there is few effort done for minimizing the risk. The main objective of this study is to analyze the Seismic Evaluation of Buildings in Kathmandu Valley based on the parameters given by NSET and OpenDRI. The valley that spreads on an area of 900×900 square kilometers has about 2.5 million populations. The Department of Education, Nepal, has listed in total of 1709 schools in the Kathmandu Valley. While the actual field data collection and data entry from the open source tells us that there are 2256 schools and colleges within the Kathmandu Valley. These schools and college have 5769 buildings in the Kathmandu valley. These buildings are analyzed on based on the different parameters and the result shows that the buildings of the Kathmandu valley are vulnerable to the seismic hazard. Proper information sharing and improvement of the building structure should be done.
